When people think of Pittsburgh, they think of “the city of steel” because of the heavy influence of the steel industry. It’s also known as the “city of bridges” for it’s over 440 bridges. While the population of Pittsburgh itself is approximately 200,000 people, when you consider the greater metropolitan area, the population of “greater Pittsburgh” would be closer to 2.6 million. The demographics of Pittsburgh are largely attributed to German, Irish, Italian and Polish ancestry but in last ten years the Croatian and Ukrainian communities have increased.
Did you know that Pittsburgh has been named one of the best places to visit in the world – many times? There are many local attractions within the city and surrounding area: View from Mt Washington (a “top 10 most beautiful views” by USA Today, The Allegheny Observatory, Fort Pitt Block House are a few of the free things to do in the area. You can also adventure outside the metropolitan city area where there are many parks and nature trails. Travel a little farther out and you can visit lake Erie or even Niagara Falls.
When asked to describe what a mission experience in Pittsburgh was like, David Domalski (NAMB Journeyman) stated “Pittsburgh is diverse in about every sense of the word. There is racial, cultural, behavioral, socioeconomic, and religious diversity, just to name a few. The beautiful thing about serving at our ministry center is that it’s located in an area where that diversity is reflected in the neighborhood we primarily serve. It also has the BEST view of the city!! (unbiased opinion). As a college student, you can begin to let the Lord align your heart with His heart – a heart for the least of these. Compassion Ministry and Evangelism should walk hand-in-hand as much as possible, but they are not exclusively a ‘means to an end’. Serving the physical needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ is still obedience to Jesus!”
