Hurricane season. is already leaving its mark on communities from North Carolina to Texas.
In early September, Hurricane Dorian made landfall at Cape Hatteras in North Carolina as a Category 1 storm, following a destructive journey that started in late August. Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) teams from North Carolina and surrounding states are providing help and hope where it’s needed most, including trained chainsaw and mud-out units, as well as portable kitchens capable of providing hot meals to storm victims.
Following Dorian, Tropical Storm Imelda dumped as much as 43 inches of rain in some parts of Southeast Texas, leading to significant flooding that has impacted not only residents, but also churches in the area. SBDR teams from Texas, as well as Missouri, Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky are now doing flood recovery work in Southeast Texas communities including Beaumont, Vidor and Nederland. Emergency kitchens and portable shower units have also been deployed.
During a major crisis response, we work in coordination with national and local partners, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, state emergency management teams and other relief organizations to maximize opportunities to help. Send Relief, the compassion ministry of NAMB, supports SBDR by packing supplies to help with their onsite relief efforts and is leading the recovery work in Puerto Rico.
